With Linux the only way to truly appreciate it is to ditch X Windows and use
only the command line. Once you figure out how to make shell scripts you
will be pleased. You will now have the power to do with one command what
takes all day pointing and clicking.
If you write code you will have found Nirvana.
I have an old colleague from my dot-com days who is an absolute master of
installing Linux to laptops. If all else fails contact him because he KNOWS
