The velleman kits are just fine for this. I have used them. I make a
couple of tweaks to mine. Essentially, these are one chip solutions for the
LED driver. Its available lin, log, and expo. Add input buffer and you
have all you need.
Here is one I used on a project showing the velleman kit I changed the LEDs
to 3mm for my project, It came with 5 mm LEDs and a small front plastic
faceplate that was nice enough. I did not use it.

I got all mine from Hobbytron I think. They have several different
varieties. Cana-kit sells one too which seems smaller than the velleman.

You might do a Google search on velleman and find better variety and prices.

Anyone know a source of really cheap LED bargraph VU meter modules? Doesn't
have to be proper VU scale. Something sort of logarithmic analog input and
has all the drivers and LEDs on it.
