A more apropos thing to wonder about would be why chip vendors
don't give their specs without an NDA, forcing libre software
implementers (Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD...) to reverse
engineer them, with poor compatibility as a result.

As for your laptop, I'd suggest you ask for help on the CCRMA
mailing lists, newsgroups or forums. Someone may have the
answer.
