ROFL! In years past, I never really liked Linux, and apologize for
having called Linux users "Linux kiddies," but I'd had some very bad
experiences with Linux... it crashed frequently, and when it did, one
wanted to shout an obscenity that's one letter off from its FSCK
utility that seemed to mangle, rather than fix, the problems. With
Linux, power failures meant data death, whereas my Solaris and FreeBSD
boxes would, upon going back on, run FSCK cleanly, and go merrily on
their ways. Linux, unless a journaling filesystem is used, still
suffers from this problem. Also, in years past, most freeware for
UN*X(-like) systems on the 'net was distributed in source form and
written to compile on a wide range of systems, but as Linux gained
popularity, one began to see more and more software written
specifically for Linux systems with seemingly little to no regard for
compilation on any other UN*X(-like) systems. FreeBSD, on the other
hand, was not an experimental toy; it not only free like Linux, but
it's been a rock-solid OS. Oddly, however, FreeBSD, despite it's
advantages, never gained the same popularity as Linux.
