[sdiy] making music with the 3080 on ebay

Last time I talked to Thomas (and this was right around the time MA went
bye-bye last April 1st), he didn't seem terribly eager to continue with the
books. We talked a little about someone else taking them over, but I don't
know as he's really pursued it.

Believe it or not, I think the discontinuance of the CA3080 played a fairly
large role in his decision to cash it all in. That, and running something
like MA was an amazing amount of work for very little return.

It's a pity - he had two really good books in the works. I've got the first
draft of one of them and some really cool circuits from the other, including
probably the most beautiful sounding filter I've tried yet (made up of as
yet non-discontinued parts, no less). I think this stuff was his best work,
definitely some fairly new ground, and not a CEM in sight. He's never
released me to talk about either project, so that's a pretty good sign at
least that he's holding his options open - he did talk about someday
publishing in a magazine. It's a frustrating position to be in, but it's
not my intellectual property. This stuff needs to be in the hands of
someone with talent. Anyway, I'm hoping the lure that draws us all in will
work again on him.

Now and then I try to gently prod him back to the fold, but he ain't biting.
FWIW, I'll forward this thread to him.

The second of his great interests can be found at his website here, though
it has nothing to do with Synth DIY:

No, unfortunately, MAP is no longer around. I believe Thomas Henry got an
offer for a good gig teaching mathematics at a local university and that
occupies too much of his time. As to whether the books are still available,
well, that's a good question. At the moment, it appears they are not. I
can't imagine they would be a lot of trouble to print up again (it would
take more time than effort), and maybe if Mr. Henry gets enough requests...
As far as the guy selling them on eBay, maybe I'll write and ask him if
they're copies or originals, and also keep an eye on him to see if he sells
them again.

Frankenstein" was on this morning) Servo
