Older MATLABs were all floating point, but the latest versions let you 
specify specific data types, like integers or whatever.

Sure you can do a lookup table; just make an array. I had an undergrad 
working on stuff like that to simulate the Hal Alles engine from the 
Digital Keyboards Synergy.
