Sort of answering myself here...
I see now that matlab nowdays have int8, int16 types for signed integers etc, but that my ten year old version doesn't. So are there any other methods/tools that anyone know of?

Subject: [sdiy] Matlab and byte types
Hello all!
What if I want to simulate audio generating and processing in an embedded microcontroller, with table lookups and integer arithmetics and everything. Is this possible in Matlab for instance, or are there other (free) tools available to do this?
