You need to get some knobs with a metal thread and metal grub screw,
then you can do them up nice and tight and the grub screw will dig into
the plastic shaft and hold well. Alternatively (and more expensive) you
could use 'collett' knobs which tighten by means of a central nut which
is normally hidden under a plastic cap.
Make sure you get a knob that fits a 6mm shaft (not 1/4" !) - perhaps
this is why you are having problems?
Since you are in Australia I can't give you any specific recommendations
(the knobs I usually use come from Rapid in UK).
