I think the European and American systems are different. In Europe, 
"professor" is sort of equivalent to "full professor" in America (I 
think).

In America, you start out as "Assitant Professor". Then if you get 
tenure, you're promoted to "Associate Professor." You can be that for the 
rest of your carrer, but then you really want to get promoted to 
full "Professor."
