Here's an idea I haven't seen before:  A half-folder.  It is monotonic for 
negative input voltages and folds over for positive ones.  Should have 
relatively stronger even harmonics than the more common symmetric folders.

A circuit like I recently gave for the non-linear limiter of the 
Hopf-bifurcation quad oscillator acts as a symmetric folder.  To make it a 
half folder, just replace one of the zeners with a regular signal 
diode.  This would give a response mimicing x(1-x) rather than 
x(1-x^2).  And the two responses could easily be mixed!
