I'd forgotten about the print shop--I even used the hole drill a few times.

You could DIY this if you had the correct bit. It's basically a polished
steel tube turning at a fairly slow speed to avoid melanizing the paper.
IIRC it has a hole cut in the side of it a ways up to let the "holes" out.
You'd also need some jig to keep the pages aligned and to position the
holes correctly. The print shop sounds really good the more I think about
it...
