I'm guessing half of the lists are fascinated by all this and the other half
are thinking "not another 303 discussion", I fall into the former. It is
remarkable how a cheap little bass synth with its cost cutting design has
transcended its original humble purpose and become a cult object, over the
years that I have been into synths (about 20 years) there have been various
surges in the 303's popularity, followed by a quite period when all the
trendy people are saying "the 303 has had its day" but then a bit later and
its back again as a new set of people discover its magic.

Another thing is apart from its obvious acidic tendancies, it is actually a
VERY capable bassline machine, I have often used mine as the hook for a
track without needing to tweak it, it sure is capable of serious funk. It
can be found in almost every genre of contempary music, pop, rap, rock,
hardcore, jungle, electro etc. etc.

I think Fatboy Slim said it best.
