It's a steel workers helmet.

The Linz gig happened next to a steel mill. Some of the sound was piped 
through the mix at various points. I think Mr Schulze was expressing 
solidarity, or something.

It appeared in quite a few subsequent PR shots from the time, so I think he 
must have been quite proud of it.
