I agree with this.  For my hybrid system I spent a lot of time figuring out 
the most useful connections and then set up a switching system to implement 
them.  Part of the patch setup is done with analog switches, to set what I 
call the "configuration" of the system, and the patch is then completed by 
setting levels in a set of several voltage-controlled mixers.
