[sdiy] What type of switch would this be?

Now, I see that these switches can be cascaded.. But shurly an X from chip A
can't be routed to a Y from chip B? The serial interface can be cascaded
which gives me hope, but I really can't see this would be done without
connecting 16 pins from chip A to B.
