Exactly.I appreciate you sharing your story, and everyone else as
well, it has been most enlightening.
I'm glad to hear so many aspiring and cautious opinions too.True it
would be foolish to put all your eggs in one basket.I completely
agree with your hobby turning into a job -but isn't that the whole
point ? Aren't we supposed to do what we love to do ? Sure it loses
it's charm when you have to do it to eat but would it be better to
work for someone else just meekly letting life pass you by and seeing
your dreams get buried yet again ?
I had none of these concerns before; job after job (mostly in the
repair business) left me feeling burned out, working for myself and
others "replacing Odyssey sliders".
Then tried going back to school at 35 to get my EE degree but found
the classroom and the profs stfling and unimaginative - I had enough
of maths as well.I couldn't handle the manic pace and was always
behind as the stress and burnout grew.I thought this is a terrible
way to learn.I love the material but hate the system. So for now I'm
going to teach myself at my own leisure just for pleasure.
Oh btw I do have a day job ,and it sucks ! BUT, I'm not complaining,
I am grateful that I can work at all and the job is secure for now
and leaves me plenty of time for my "hobby".
There is more to life than money I agree, and I for one am willing to
take a pay cut if it means I'll be doing something meaningful with my
life that might bring me and hopefully others some pleasure back.
The line between foolishness and courage to live your dream is thin I
think.I don't think we'd have Moogs or anything if people didn't
believe in what they were doing and take HUGE risks.I dont think they
even thought of it in those dollars and cents terms at all.I really
believe that ! They just did it because they had a calling , and I
for one am glad they did.
As I see it we've become more cautious, afraid, and cynical today.More
and more people are settling - in their work, relationships, etc .
I might have my head in the clouds right now, and the routine of
daily life will surely try and drag me down, but I'm definitely going
to put up a good fight !
I might find out - like the shepherd in the Alchemist- that I am
where I'm supposed to be right now, but without the journey to self
discovery I never would've know that.
Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread and to all the
dreamers, keep dreaming !
TK
