A kit was what got me into DIY. It's much less daunting for a curious synth
user/player to build a kit, than to try and make something on perfboard or
learn how to etch their own pcb, because apart from the learning curve,
they have the confidence that someone has produced a design that actually
works, avoiding the "is it me, or the components/design/whatever that's at
fault?" thing.

IMO the bare pcb option is very important - many people (inc. me) can afford
to buy several $10 - $20 pcbs and build them up as they get the parts, but
couldn't run to $150 per module.

Thanks to those who do produce kits and pcbs - life is more fun because of
their efforts :-)

Dave.
