[sdiy] small business idea

I think also sometimes certain products are priced too low, for instance
some of the PCB's I have purchased. Since this is quite a specialist market
I feel that potential customers would pay more for some of the great stuff
on offer, and selling PCB's alone though extrememly generous does not seem
to be the best way to make money/cover costs.
Take for example a $20 (retail) PCB, say this PCB requires $40 worth of
components to populate it, add $20 for a panel, total $80 - thats just parts
at retail price (based on say $40 total cost price), then add documentation
$20 value, = $100, then add the fact that since it is a kit people would be
prepared to spend a bit more, percieved value if you will, I think $150
would seem a fair price. (this is just an example and not based on any
existing product BTW)
So supplying the kit involves extra work? True but not perhaps as much as
would seem, after all the BOM is already there, most of the time so is the
documentation, and of course the panel needs designing.
I am not criticising anyone here, and maybe I am missing something but
surely selling complete kits is more viable for the business and more
convienient for the customer? I don't think people would feel they are being
ripped off if they were paying a realistic price so that the designer could
make a decent profit, maybe thats just how I see it? Also PCB's could still
be offered alone as well as with kits.
