You can buy only the printed circuit board and manual from Paia and try
to get the components locally. This way you will keep import taxes and
shipping costs within acceptable values, and you don't need to spend the
money in one single step.. I did this with Paia's MIDI2CV8 and it works
like a charm! Just make sure to get the components *before* getting the
board, or you may get stuck with half a board assembled, missing several
components!
Personally I decided to go for a modular system, the cost of each module
alone is small and you can upgrade your system at the rate your pocket
allows. But it is much harder to build a synth this way... many boards,
many panels, lots of wiring - and you will only "hear" what you built
after a certain number of modules are running: at least one power
supply, one VCO, one VCA, one filter and one envelope generator (and a
CV/Gate source) is the absolute minimum.
