I've managed to build a lot of stuff without spending
barely any money at all. If you're willing to build
something that won't give you instant gratification,
i'd say build separate modules one at a time. If
midi-control is an absolute must, take a look at the
MCV-628
(http://m.bareille.free.fr/mcv628/mcv628.html). You'll
need to build a programmer and have a computer to do
it. Otherwise a simple resistor-ladder keyboard is
pretty simple to build. To build something that just
makes sound as a start, you'll basically only need a
powersupply, controller (midi2cv/keyboard) and a VCO
(extreme basics). Personally, i've never had a lot of
money to spend on electronics and have been diging
around the internet for schematics that are based on
low-cost parts or parts i have allready and the result
has been pretty good so far...
