replying to myself,

Playing with it a bit more. I realized it did not self-oscillate. 
decreasing the 100K feedback resistor to 68K and adding another diode 
made it much better. It still does something strange at large inputs, 
but the overall resonant sound is nice and it self-oscillates as well.
