No I don't agree.... ;^P
Although I do not 'speak' Spanish, I'm willing to give it a try. I can get
enough out of it to make sense of the conversation. I'd be happy to
try Finnish as well. Magnus has given me a few words of Sweedish,
at least I can say "Hej" to everyone. (Hej Magnus, and Senso :^)
I'm kind of sensitive on the language issue. I speak regularly with people
from Japan. We speak in English, but I'm thankful that we don't switch to
Japanese. I'd be sunk right after "Good Morning" and "yeah, I hear that".
Americans (I don't speak for all) tend to think that everyone should speak
English... when in fact we don't completely understand the Brits who invented
it in the first place :^P. I have been flamed for speaking 'Jinglish' to the
Japanese... omitting words like 'the' which do not exist in their language.
Communication is the issue, not grammar.
One quick story... I remember getting a call from Brazil, from an engineer who
had the FUNNIEST accent, like some popular cartoon character in the USA. I was
so ready to laugh, until...
1) I recognized that his questions (in broken English) showed a deep understanding
of my product
2) The question implied a really high degree of education / intelligence
3) If we were to switch to Portugese (his language, I presume) I would be quite
unable to even say 'good morning'.
Since then, I listen to whatever language and try to gather what I can. If I don't
get it, I'll ask (with no shame).
