>>To be fair, I have to admit that I've never actually heard any Tomita --
but I can at least say that I have *heard of* Tomita -- many times. Most of
the artists I have "discovered" have been from radio airplay. Are there any
good online (legal) examples of Tomita, so I can see what all the fuss is
about?<<
If you're limiting yourself to airplay, you're missing everything. Places
that sell his stuff like buy.com or amazon.com will have crappy low quality
mono examples. They don't do justice but it's something.
>>Anyone have suggestions for a good "first Tomita album" to purchase -- you
know, something that highlights him at his very best?<<
I noticed in the following post James Patchell recommented Snowflakes are
Dancing. However it bothers me when people don't quite think things
through. That was his very first album and thus the least sophisticated and
used the least amount of gear. You won't hear a lot of the effects and
sounds Tomita is known for on that CD. Kosmos, or Firebird, or The Planets
are the higher points of his synthesis. You'd have to look at the
selections on the CD to see what you might want to hear most.
I wonder if this also means you haven't heard W. Carlos. Anybody who
doesn't own Well-Tempered Synthesizer is missing the most colorful and best
sounding synth album ever as far as non-imitative synth only type sounds go.
Without Carlos there would be no Tomita.

My first two posts apparently never made it to the list. The just vanished.
