for me soldering 0603 IS fun. I recently did one thru-hole PCB and it was a nightmare (for me) to assemble. This doesn't mean that the "user interface" like jacks, pots, switches should be small too. Not at all. They should be as big as usuall, but with the rest smaller there's room for more functionality. I still use large IDC headers, even though they take plenty of PCB space because that's what people use interfacing their stuff.

There are allways people preffering thru-hole and I respect that. I know that when 01005 will be widely used, I will be the one shouting "what's wrong with 0603? you kill the DIY spirit with those small buggers I cannot even see"
