I think the flat spring will have to be around 4" - 5" long total - it 
appears (just a guess) that one end of the spring is wrapped around a 
metal post to hold it in place, makes a gentle arc around another post 
(guessing again), with the felt attached to the free end, pressing the 
tape against a aluminum pulley just before it is sent to the tape heads. 
Have no idea what kind of metal was used originally, or for that 
matter even if it was metal...  phosphor-bronze perhaps?
