Years ago Intel had a Supercomputer Division that producded Hypercube 
computers. If I remember correctly there were upto 128 nodes. Early systems 
used i860 processors. Later systems used pentiums. I think a pair of 
processors at each node.

N-cube produced a supercomputer with 9000 processing nodes.

Don't forget Capybara with Kyma software from Symbolic Sound. I have one. 
Very small by your fantasy standards but marvelous anyway.
