Maybe a soldution is in fact to lay out a rather larger (say 20cm x 20cm) pc
board. They on this board have 1/2 of pre-soldered ICs brought out to 0.1"
spaced pad arrays. Solder in stuff like a set of TL074's, som SSM2210/2220
matched pairs, some popcorn LM311s/CD4051s/etc. Toss in an AVR with download
cable and a Xilinx 50K digital chip. Even a connectior for a 2x16 LCD. Have an
area of standard .1 x .1 breadboard, and an area for 1206 parts (yes, you CAN
solder these easily). Have anoter section along the edge for pcb mounted
pots/jacks/switches.

In other words, just like a standard "Evaluation /Development Board" for a
particular chip, but instead this is geared toward synth DIY (still rooted in
the analog but with digital support).

If 100 of these could be sold, the cost would be around $10ea + parts cost + $20
for tooling (solder paste screen + pick & place).

Just a thought.
