I suppose it is acceptable to critique the spelling and grammar
of others who speak English as a native language (which might
include Southerners like me) but in my opinion those who speak
English as a second language should be given much more latitude.
I don't know about the rest of you, but when someone makes an
effort to communicate with me in *my* language, I appreciate
the effort.
What really annoys me is not bad spelling and grammar so much
as silly internet idioms. For example, inserting "LOL" after
every damn thing they say, as if each utterance was hilarious,
really gets on my nerves. Emoticons are also annoying if they
are used excessively. I would much rather put up with someone
who struggles to write in English than someone who inserts an
emoticon or "LOL" after every sentence.
