And then divvy up each wafer for various processes and packages? That
would probably makes things far more difficult, and expensive. Besides,
I doubt that the CEM3340 and SSM2040 (for example) were meant for the
same kind of wafer. The 2044 ended up not sounding quite as good.

If somebody has a few million to play with, and a bit of patience to
get their money back, then this can easily happen. Note, this is a
tremendously big "if"! People can break even and even make a profit
with analog ICs these days, but it is not fast money, as is trendy.

How about investing the same few million into developing a DIY wafer
kit?
