There are SOIC-socket-to-DIP adapters (see http://test-socket.com/, among 
others), as well as SOIC test clips, although they're not cheap. Combined 
with a breadboard for parts you can substitute with through-hole and flea 
clips for parts you can't, the resulting mess would surely build upon the
solderless breadboard's legendary reputation for reliability.

Anyway, that's one possibility.
