speaking of tiny parts...

I was having a meeting with a power semiconductor supplier and telling
them about a serious field problem... recirculating water systems that
corrode the aluminum chill plates we used (not anymore :^)

I told them I had found a replacement material with four times the
thermal conductivity of copper... and that was a really EXCELLENT
insulator...

They bit...

DIAMOND. (carbon has both metallic and non-metallic properties... is is a
very
good thermal conductor like a metal with perfect crystal structure... AND it
has about
zero electron mobility - all holes are neatly filled, thank you :^)

One guy said "heh heh if we had a diamond THAT big we could all retire"...

and I said "Oh NO... we want you to put your device on a little tiny diamond
like
this" (indicates pin-head sized substrate)

The guy went NUTS !!! "DO YOU REALIZE what the current density would be in
a chip that small, its just not POSSIBLE !!!"

(the salesman had to restrain him... "er... Joe its OK... he's just pulling
your leg"

Seriously... there are some places where SMT is JUST what you really need to
have to get performance. OTOH a disposable cell phone or laptop computer is
exactly what caused RoHS in the first place.

I still FIX my electronics if the parts are available. Not for long I think...
