Lead is a high profile case backed by 70's media exposure ( anti-paint
chip eating ), so it's an easy target. Food is a big product in the US (
by percentage of land used for it's production, and the "feed the world
factor" ), and I seriously doubt that the EPA would be able to stop
farmers from using toxic crap as fast as they can get rid of lead. They
will only go after bad primary ingredients. 

As was stated earlier, nobody is going after the car battery! So you
have to wonder where the true drivers are for this latest anti-lead
campaign
