I recommend the PAIA Theremax. I built one years ago, first musical
thing I made from a kit, wasn't a 555 photocell thing. It worked great
until during a good-natured bit of wrestling, a very heavy guest of
mine fell onto it, smashing it to pieces. Not that the product was
flimsy, it was the circumstances.
Since then I have gotten a second PCB from PAIA and repopulated it. It
will go back together... psuedo-soon. The Etherwave was not so readily
available (that I knew of?) during those times. The Etherwave is
supposed to be excellent, if you can budget it, it sounds like a good
choice. The Theremax as it is I think sounds quite good, and can be
readily modified for various types of playing action and a more
"classic" sound. Once you season it to your taste, the Theremax is an
excellent instrument for the price. IMO PAIA have cut too many corners
on some gear, not the case with TMax, it's my favorite thing they've
done.
If you are interested, then see the PAIA pages, including their theory
and modification pages. Then do a web search for other people's
modifications of the Theremax. Quite cool, I think!
