Yep, we still use lead on roofs in UK! Looking out my window now I can
see (at least I would be able to see if it wasn't dark) lead on the
roofs of every house in the street (not the whole roof, just the
edges). Sometimes zinc is used because it's cheaper, but actually lead
is considered better because it lasts much longer and is easier to form
into the exact needed shapes to stop the edges of roofs leaking.
I don't think anyone gets lead poisoning from lead on roofs ... lead is
a pretty inert material and doesn't readily dissolve, even with rain
water running over it for years and years. I guess it's also pretty
easy to recycle if/when it is ever replaced.
... so all this ROhS stuff does seem a little wierd when I know there's
1000s times more lead in the roof of my house than I will ever use in a
lifetime's worth of electronics :)
