[sdiy] cap discharge methods?

Many years ago I traded in two non-working receivers for a CD player at a local used stereo/components store. While I was there, the tech popped off the case, took a big screwdriver, and stuck it in there. There was a spark and crack noise. He turned the thing on and it worked (woundn't power on before)! I'm assuming he bridged the two capacitor leads with the screwdriver.

I'd like to try the safer, more proper, way first. How do I go about this? From the messeges I've gathered this:

One end alligator clip to ground, the other end to one leg of resistor (value...rating ?). Next, connect the other leg of resistor to capacitor (which lead should it connect to, +/- ?)

I need to do this to some broken stereo gear and a K2000's power supply. They're tucked away at the moment so I don't know the cap size.

Thanks,
peng

Oh yeah. Thanks for the heads-up about the lawnmower. I was thinking it's a beautiful day for mowin' the roof. Now I know better.
