Yes, but a wavetable sawtooth with its 256 little steps will also have a
harmonic series that is similar. I don't see how its harmonics are going
to be limited to 256 times the fundamental only.
True, its not an exact representation of a perfect saw but there will
content above the clocking frequency. And not just of the harmonics of a
the clock.
If you consider the simplest case of a wavetable consisting of a block of
all 1s for 128 steps and then the remainder of the wavetable a block of
all 0s. This will produce a square wave and at a fundamental of 50Hz it
will sound no different to a square wave produced by any other digital
means.
