When I was a kid I used to test the old 6V lamp cells with my tongue. At
the age of 8 I read somewhere that transformers could make voltages
bigger as well as reduce them. So I applied 6V to the output of my
train-set transformer to see if I could get a higher voltage on the
primary. To measure the voltage I stuck the unconnected mains plug in my
mouth!
Well my tongue didn't tingle so I thought that this step-up method was
flawed. So much for that theory... Bear in mind I knew nothing about such
things as AC or DC (or basic electrical safety for that matter).
So leaving the plug pins still in my mouth I disconnected the battery.
And thus my first lesson in back EMF ended with a very sore tongue.
