To put a quark in this thread, I was going to suggest renting some time with
the super collider at Argon National Laboratories.  There, perhaps one could
smash an ARP 2600 into a Yamaha DX7 at near light speed.  I'm sure the spray
of subatomic particles would render all of the necessary clues.

But, instead, I'll await Ian's answer, if the question is answerable at
all......
