I was taught SMT soldering as part of an electronics course I'm doing at the moment.
We had to use a soldering iron first, then we removed the parts and re-did them using solder paste and a hot-air pencil. Much easier with the pencil and paste than with the iron.

You just need a good set of tweezers and a magnifying glass (even my fine
tipped soldering iron looks HUGE compared to the 0402 devices).
Anyway, I managed it without much hassle, but I wouldn't want to do it
again.. 0603 is about as small as I'd go, normally, I preffer 0802 though...
