Thank you for all the suggestions so far!

I am using 1/8 watt resistors and tiny ceramic capacitors, and quality is not
an issue as I am only driving LEDs. I am also using tiny transistors salvaged
from old VCRs, so all the discrete parts that I'm using are (on average) about
as small as their smt counterparts. To get an idea what I need go here and
check out the last item:

The case used in this project holds four AAA batteries. I have a similar but
larger case that holds four AA batteries, it measures about 1 1/2 inches by 1
1/2 inches. I want to build a three channel led color organ on the face of it,
using 48 small leds, and discrete circuitry is the only way that I can make it
all fit within about 1/4 inch depth.

This is a very nice filter page.

Take care,
Doug
