   I tried to do something like this with my own modular, but even using 
a VME connector with 96 pins (90 of which were non-power supply), I found 
that there was no real good way to divvy up the pins so that modules were 
interchangeable.  My guess would be that to achieve something that would 
be _universal_, you'd need on the order of 200+ connections.  That way 
you can accomodate Audio/CV/Gate inputs and outputs for designs which are 
as connection heavy as sequencers.

   I once had the idea of using the DIMM module format, since it has over 
200+ connections and has relatively cheap connectors.  Of course you'd 
have to _really_ utilize serious SMT technology, even if you extend the 
length of the card.  But the notion of both designing and building stuff 
that tight and complex soon lost its appeal.  :)
