You might want to define some loose standards for pinout regarding grouping.
For example, CV inputs here, outputs there. Then a module like an 
"arp filter" can be swapped with another sharing filter with the same 
pinout or even a vco. For all we know, someone might even make a 
"defineable" holder module with jacks, pots and a ZIF socket (or 
whatever) to support these goodies.

If cost wasn't a factor, I'd even add smd leds and drivers to each 
board to indicate various voltages :)
