[sdiy] vactrol question

These recent posts regarding vactrols got me thinking...

I have a little toy drum machine that I have circuit-bent to give it gate 
inputs and a mixer...   but accent and/or velocity control would be a nice 
addition.

After browsing through vactrol datasheets I've noticed that on-time is 
quick, but off-time is a bit slow... so I was thinking these might actually 
work well for an accent or velocity circuit.   This drum machine is a piece 
o' crap anyways, so simple mods are preferred to actually building a VCA for 
each voice... hence my interest in the vactrol idea.

What do you guys think, is the response time going to be acceptable for a 
use like this?  I don't have any vactrols on-hand, otherwise I'd just knock 
one up and try it.
