While possibly not too related, a long time I ago I made a "Midi -
Vibes" type instrument using 3 Roland PAD-8 (Octapad) PCBs.
Admittedly, I was working in the Roland service center at the time
and they were kinda easy to get ;-)
I modded them for additional gain on the inputs and adjusted their
software sensetivities to a usable range. A single keypad and display
was switched between the boards.
Midi outputs were merged and remapped.

I started the design previously with discreet components, but found
myself in a parts duplication jungle from all of the conditioning for
spikes and other considerations.
Comparators, R/C delay networks, one-shots, etc.
It was to be installed on real vibes and with what soft mallets were
used, signals had to qualified pretty well.

One feature the PAD-8s had though were cancellation pickups on the case.
If these sensed a larger signal than the pads, they disqualified any
pad signals in order to avoid mistriggers. Kind of a smart idea. :)
