Hi Kevin,
I think you maybe should have taken one. Maybe the fellow is genuinely
trying to be friends with you? Refusing a gift can sometimes spoil a
budding friendship. ;) He probably thinks that you think only of him in a
"clinical" sense--as a "customer"--an opportunity to make money from, and
not as the warm and considerate human being that he truly is. Famous
artists often feel alienated and alone, because most people only know their
stage persona and never get to know the person behind it. They find
themselves surrounded by strangers who will always be strangers, because
they can't get past their preconceived misconceptions of the artist's
fabricated public image. So, in your effort to be polite and non-imposing,
you might have just shunned a new friendship, and made a lonely artist feel
just a little bit more alone. <sniff>
If you go back, and he offers you one of the synths: PLEASE FOR THE LOVE
OF SEQUENTIAL CIRCUITS, DON'T TURN HIM DOWN!! (If you already happen to
have one of those particular synths, or simply don't want the unit, you
can always give it to me. After all, I wouldn't want your house to become
unduly cluttered. What kind of friend would I be then?) :)
Of course, I'm kidding around a bit (except for being willing to take a
spare synth off your hands.) ;)
..but if he offers you anything else, you might want to more carefully
consider your answer. ;)
take care,
Glen
