I don't think so.  I recall Edgar saying that they were offered money
from the German cultural budget (sort of like the National Endowment
for the Arts in the USA) back in the mid-'70s, when they were struggling
to buy updated gear, and they turned it down.  Edgar said they didn't
want some government bureaucrat telling them what kind of music
to do.  Doesn't sound like a communist to me.
