[sdiy] VCA controlled by MCU: linear or exp?

For an analog drum machine project, I'm about to build 10 instances of (VCA that is controlled by Atmel AVR Pulse Width Modulation output). 

Now, should I go for a linear or an exponential VCA? The voltage from AVR is linear, but what sounds "natural"?

Searching the web shows lots of both types of VCAs.
