Actually the TMS5220 was the earlier chip ( 70's vintage ).  Supposedly the
TSP has an onboard 8bit CPU and in some varients could actually do text to
speech with no extra support circuitry ( speech rom on board and the like ).   
Data on the TMS5220 is fairly easy to find...
