Sane people start with FFT analysis as a starting point. That cuts down on 
the effort slightly. :)

No, it just take some fine tuning. Not everyone thinks synthesis should 
only have a handful of parameters.

If all else fails you can use a computer to synthesize overtone 
distributions according to various algorithmic distributions.
