Most Synergy comm issues are:

a) you need a 'flip' cable (2<>3 and 3<>2) or a "null modem" adapter + straight 
cable

b) although the internal RS-232 board has several baud rates, the SW is 
hard-coded at 9600 *I think* (may be 19.2K but I 'm pretty sure it's 9600)

c) the construction quality of the Synergy is slightly above a $12 toaster oven. 
Flip the lid open and check all the cables and the "daughter card is propery 
crammed (the proper term in this case) onto the main board.
